To eliminate the enormous power plant from the Redondo Beach waterfront, the City Council has created a task force to uncover potential alternative zoning options for its location. To avoid another failed attempt like Measure B, this cooperative panel will meet for three months and create a ballot initiative that makes good sense and takes into account all members of the community. This group is made of a cross-section of individuals so that all sectors are adequately represented. It is hopeful that the panel will form a supportable and passable measure.
For nearly a century, this power plant has been on Harbor Drive and has irritated residents with its ugly smoke stacks. The eyesore has detracted from the beautiful ocean views and harbor enjoyment. Although AES had proposed building a more attractive facility, it unveiled a different initiative that would eliminate the building from the town. However, voters needed to approve new zoning regulations. Measure B, known as the Harbor Village Initiative, called for the erection of residential homes, a boutique hotel, and other commercial space. Unfortunately, in the recent March 2015 election, it was defeated. After Measure B failed, AES returned to its original restructuring idea.
In order to make everyone satisfied, the city has assembled the task force to elicit public feedback, develop new zoning laws, ensure the land is used in a way that benefits the city, and increase land values. With a fresh perspective, it may be possible to come to an agreement that is good for the city and all of its residents.
